A 200th Homecoming

Oh my goodness! If you missed the 200th Anniversary celebration at Richland, you missed an incredibly beautiful day, blessed with friends and families from near and far who enjoyed the most special music, message and feast!

Rev. Francis Wilson, the grandson of Rev. F. Bartow Asbell, Richland’s last pastor before it’s doors closed to active services, travelled all the way from Albuquerque, New Mexico to stand in the same pulpit from which his Grandfather spoke.
I know his Grandfather would have been very proud of the wonderful message he brought to the pioneer family descendants and friends of Richland! His message was complemented by the most beautiful music provided by the Wesleyan College Ensemble, the Wesleyanne’s, and the Civil Folk Singers.

The service was wrapped up with the ceremonial “burning of the note”. It was a great pleasure to have the restoration league’s ninety thousand dollar loan note burned to ash! The loan was obtained seven years ago by the League’s then President, Hon. Judge Duross Fitzpatrick and treasurer, Patti Grimsley to begin much needed work on the church’s crumbling foundation and leaking roof. It was great to have Patti help both Emmitt Sherling, our current treasurer and me to set that “paid in full” note on fire!

The fabulous food laden table outside added just the right touch for the gorgeous fall afternoon’s fellowship and reminiscing. Folks had a chance to view plans for the future of Richland or purchase a print or reprinted history of the church as well. All in all it was a perfect afternoon celebrating a most extraordinary church in our area’s history.

It is hard to believe, but “Keeping Christmas at Richland” is just around the corner now! Don’t forget to mark your calendar for Saturday, Dec. 3rd at 6 p.m and Sunday, Dec. 4th at 3 p.m. TICKETS ARE ON SALE NOW ON OUR WEBSITE!!

Because our living history Christmas event has been such a success, we are selling tickets ONLINE or by calling an 800 number so that those who come will be sure to have a seat!! Our Saturday evening performance last year was a “SRO” event, (standing room only) and we don’t want anyone to be without a seat this year!

All funds received for tickets go to the continued preservation and protection of Richland Church and it’s historic cemetery.

Don’t forget, if you need a Christmas gift for a special someone, our signed limited edition prints of Richland Church make a great gift…and you can now order them or our re-printed spiral bound edition of the Historical Collections of Richland Church online!!

Thank you for your continued support of Richland Restoration League’s efforts in protecting our beautiful “landmark of Christianity”.
